I bought silverware and a few plates at the El Rancho flea market when I first moved to Reno. I’ve been back innumerable times but not to buy anything necessarily, more to observe. I’ve been transfixed with the things and entrepreneurial striving of a person who sells a used dish rack or four-foot-tall statue of the Virgin of Guadeloupe … how is the chaos of society filtered to result in the articles spread around the El Rancho Drive-in every Saturday and Sunday?

For those walking around and gazing upon the visual carnival of things for sale at a negotiable price, the flea market can be nothing more than a diversion, a mobile, a trivial place of unwanted spatulas. But for vendors who show up week after week, year after year, I learn the flea market is a transformative and critically important place where young lives are defined and loneliness is temporarily muted … on this edition of the Wild Hare podcast, join me for a visit to the El Rancho Public Market …
